The grapes are hand harvested from sustainably farmed vineyards in a cool, maritime Atlantic climate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, with naturally occurring carbonation from fermentation contributing the characteristic gentle spritz of Txakoli. It is dry and light-bodied, with high acidity. VEGAN.
The Lazkano family has been making wine in Getaria since 1923, and Gaintza is now run by the fourth generation. Today, brothers Joseba and Urtzi Lazkano continue the family tradition, working with vineyards that stretch across roughly 25 hectares around Getaria and maintaining control over everything from vineyard work and harvesting to winemaking and bottling. The estate sits beneath Mount Garate and close to the Cantabrian Sea, and this maritime environment is fundamental to the character of the wines: the region is cool, rainy and strongly influenced by the Atlantic, allowing the grapes to retain naturally high acidity and freshness. Gaintza approaches farming with an emphasis on sustainability and minimizing agricultural inputs, using integrated viticulture and reducing the use of phytosanitary treatments where possible, while also incorporating solar energy and lower-impact materials into the winery and packaging.
